NYC: From Morningside Heights (116 St) to Herald Square (34 St)

Hey lovelies!

Today’s blog post is in the form of a “Follow me around for a day”. Now, despite living in NYC, I don’t usually find the time to explore its hidden gems. I’m the worst at reading directions. I can’t hail a cab. I never know what events are going on. But this summer, I’ve decided to hone in on these skills, starting at the very top of Manhattan.

First, I explored the lovely academic neighborhood, Morningside Heights (Upper West Side), which is home to the infamous Columbia University and its lesser known women’s college, Barnard College. Since summer just started, all the matriculates were flooding out and the tourists were flooding in. There was a dynamic flow of equilibrium in this picturesque retreat. Here’s a pic from a tour that had just finished:

Outfit of the Day:

– Halter Top: Forever 21

– Lace Shorts: Forever 21

– Cross body Bag: Michael Kors

– Gold Channing Watch: Michael Kors

– 2 Gold Bangles: TJ Maxx

– Gold Necklace: F21

– Platinum Sandals: Steve Madden

– Aviator Sunglasses: Cole Haan

Barnard College is only across the street, but unfortunately it doesn’t receive the same love as Columbia does. They call themselves, “a liberal arts research school”, which combines the closely-knit community of a liberal arts college with the large STEM/research institution of a university. Our lovely tour guide really provided insight into its thriving community — both socially and academically.

Can you believe this gorgeous campus can fit within the confines of Manhattan!?

Next, I took the MTA bus M04 all the way down to Midtown. Since the roads were blocked with traffic, it was about an hour ride. But I love looking out the window and soaking in the beauty of this cultural magnet. Fifth avenue is just breathless; I love the contrast between designer stores like Hermes, Tiffany and Co, and Valentino with less expensive brands like American Eagle and H&M. I think this is what makes NYC so magical —  a mix of people from all different backgrounds.

I had the bus all to myself, after the bus driver kicked everyone but me, out.

Finally, I made it to Macy’s at Herald Square, where I did a bit of shopping. I have to admit, walking inside made me squeal with excitement.

Of course, there’s always interesting stuff going on in the city. This summer 2015, a culinary pop up market, Broadway Bites, opened up between 33rd Street and Broadway. They have partnered  up with Urban Space and H&M to bring outdoor small businesses to the heart of Midtown. Food and people in the city — what better way to spend the evening?

Before I went back home, I browsed around Manhattan Mall.

Gap: A Place to Score Classic Styles at Affordable Prices

Hey everyone!

If you’re into the preppy/classic style, be sure to check out Gap.com. Lately, along with Old Navy, they’ve really stepped up their game, earning a title that’s equivalent to name brands like JCrew and Madewell. Even their website has been updated for a chic and sophisticated feel.

Gap Blog Post- June 19,15

Here are some of my recent purchases from them (These are collective):

As you can see, most of their clothing features a fresh range of light colors, which is great for summertime. Gap also really likes to use lace, stripes, and classic styles. Pairing a simple pair of jeans and a blouse from gap calls for an effortless outfit, no matter what season.

*My light wash, ripped jeans are also from Gap. I scored them for only $12!

A Day in the City: June 14, 2015

Last Sunday, my mom and I had an exciting and fun-filled day in Manhattan. First, we went a brief college tour of the Macaulay Honors Program at CUNY. At first, I didn’t know much about the school and its prestige. But as current students and former alumni expressed their gratitude towards their professors and classes, I realized how much of a tight-knit community this college offers. I’m definitely considering it for the future.

After, we walked around Central Park, where a Puerto Rican festival was going on. Since NYC never gets boring, there are ALWAYS events happening. Today, there was a barbecue festival in Madison Square Park in the Flatiron District. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of meat, I still got to experience a juicy pork-pulled burger.

People were scattered everywhere on the grassy lawns of the park, holding their drinks and munching on ribs and burgers. This is the true embodiment of NY: loud, crowded, and HUNGRY.
